Auld Reekie 9872
Labelled affectionately nowadays as 'the grand old lady' of the line, 'Auld Reekie' was built by the noted builder, Jennings of Chelmsford, in 1936. An Atlantic type loco of free lance design, it is only steam in outline, being powered by a 1924 side valve Austin 7 engine in the tender with a drive shaft through to the chain driven, driving wheels. 'Auld Reekie' first ran at Jennings own line at Weymouth before transferring to Barry Island. From there it was purchased by Matthew Kerr Snr. in 1941 and transported directly to Arbroath.
Over the many years on the K.M.R. line it has carried countless thousands of passengers and is nowadays treated as 'semi-retired' pulling only light trains of two coaches, usually in the mornings. It enjoys something of a revered status, being considered 'THE' locomotive of K.M.R.
